History: Sean's Background & History

Personality:

POSITIVE

• Resilient - The first 16 years of Sean's life were extremely normal for a kid from a working class family. He hung out with his friends, worked a part time job, got into fights with his kid brother, and groaning at his Dad's corny jokes. The biggest emotional turmoil in his life was over his mother leaving their family when he was young, being Mexican during Trump's first presidential run, and combating the social anxiety (and social media) of being a teenager in the mid 2010s. These are all real joys and real problems, but when Sean's life takes an abrupt turn away from the comforts of a normal childhood and he is suddenly the one solely responsible for taking care of himself and his younger brother, Sean absolutely rises to the occasion. He isn't always perfect, he isn't always completely selfless, but he weathers unimaginable trauma and comes through it in pursuit of making sure he and his brother remain okay. Sean does not give up, even when it would be extremely easy to do so. While he might breakdown from the weight of everything he's gone through, there is almost nothing that can break Sean Diaz forever.


• Thoughtful -  Sean is a sensitive guy with a love for observing the world around him, both from the perspective of an artist and simply in an effort to take stock of himself and his situation. He takes his responsibilities to others very seriously and tries to analyze the best way he can impact people. He cares about things like nature and beauty and is capable of deep wistfulness and wonder. He also is very observant of the emotions of others, thinks about their motivations, and is very eager to understand them. This goes doubly when he considers someone special to him. 

• Devoted -  Speaking of people Sean cares about, this boy does not mess around when it comes to loyalty. If he's committed himself to something, he sees it through -- from his hobbies to the people in his life. This goes into occasionally self-destructive hyperdrive for his little brother, but it can go that far for newer friends as well. He bonds quickly with people, particularly ones who he meets in this highly tumultuous period of his life and Sean has the full capacity to make some very stupid choices in favor of assisting someone with something they believe will work, even if he has his own doubts. That goes double if they're cute (Ximilia, also known as Intergalactic Hottie Cruise, is gonna be a tough road for this boy).

NEGATIVE

• Stubborn -  When push comes to shove, Sean is capable of being extremely decisive and sticking to his choices. That... is not always a good thing. This kid is Olympic level in events such as grudge-holding, engaging in sunk cost fallacy, and missing the forest for the trees. He latches to certain ideas and funnels all his energy into pursuing them, to the point where it becomes a single-minded endeavor. He is good at retroactively justifying choices he feels guilty about as "not that bad" in an effort to avoid having to apologize for them and struggles with being able to forgive others. This is his critical flaw and crucial to defining the trajectory of his growth (both in his canon and in Ximilia).


• Emotionally Immature (aka "Is A Teenager, Unfortunately") -  Further contextualizing the above, many of Sean's flaws come from still growing up and learning about himself. After being traumatically ejected from his normal childhood into one defined by death, homelessness, and chronic exposure to injustice, Sean has had to do a lot of growing up very quickly. Needless to say, the growing pains are real. His emotional immaturity often manifests as a sort of dissonence between two opposing feelings Sean holds simultaneously; such as loving his brother more than life itself and resenting that he no longer is allowed to live for himself, or being aware of the need to make time for emotional processing while still consistently denying himself that time. There's a war between the boy Sean was before his father's death and the man Sean is becoming, and who is winning that war changes from day to day. 

• Awkward/Self-conscious -  Sean isn't a shrinking violet by any means, but boy does teenage boy insecurity have its hooks in him. Will he bring a condom with him on a first date with a girl? Yes. Will he overanalyze what kind of comment to leave on her social media post? Also yes. Will he practice what he's going to say in the mirror? Yes. Will he get extremely embarrassed and pissed at himself when a cute boy sees him do something lame?  Yes. It's a nightmare. I'm sorry in advance. 

Powers/Abilities: Sean is a normal-ass teenage boy from 2016 America with no powers to speak of. He does have some abilities, though!

• Artistic Ability -  What can I say, the kid knows how to draw! He's a very dedicated artist who draws daily, even during the most difficult parts of his life. 


• Bilingual (Spanish) -  His father is a Mexican immigrant and Sean grew up speaking Spanish in the home. He can be a little Spanglishy at times, but he is definitely fluent.


• Car Knowledge -  Sean has helped out in his father's garage since he was 13 years old and grew up around cars. They aren't a passion of his (he could take or leave them), but a lifetime of exposure to his mechanic father has given him generalized knowledge about their care/upkeep/quirks. While this mostly comes in handy whenever he needs to hotwire a car, he could also diagnose automotive problems (and maybe fix them, provided the solution is simple enough). 


• Outdoor Survival Skills -  Before his father's death, Sean often went hiking with his dad and knew basic camping skills going into his prolonged homelessness. After the last month living in a collaborative commune of drifters who live off the grid as a lifestyle, Sean's experience with this kind of living has grown a little more advanced, even if he is hardly a survivalist. His knowledge goes up to understanding that eating random berries is a terrible, but doesn't have an encyclopedic knowledge of which berries are good to eat.

Regret: Sean's regret is not playing with his brother on the day of his father's murder, believing that if he had then he would still be alive.

Suitability: While Sean is a normal teenager who has lived a relatively normal life, that life feels very far away from him now. Sean has come into his own as an extremely hardworking person who is willing to do just about anything to serve his goals; be that making sure his brother doesn't go to bed hungry or, in the case of Ximilia, undoing the worst thing that ever happened to his family. His skills may not be as advanced as others, but he is a fast learner and is not too proud to put his all into even the most menial tasks if it is an asset to undoing his regret. This is a kid who is going to do his orb goal every single mission, no matter how much he hates it.
